Site Reliability Engineer · Melbourne, Australia

I am a Site Reliability Engineer based in Melbourne, at ANZ since 2023, where my work centres on automation and Google Cloud. Before that I taught software engineering at Monash University, from 2015 to 2019.

Beyond my day-to-day work I am drawn to data visualisation, small public APIs, and software that stays simple by design. A few specifics:

  • 29 original repositories on GitHub since 2011 — Malaysia API, a browser sentiment analyser, a D3 word cloud generator, and a Reddit r/AmItheAsshole crawler on a Raspberry Pi.
  • Most recent project: Robogo, a YAML test-automation tool written in Go.
  • Values readable configuration, static files over unnecessary databases, and clear writing.
  • Not yet a Rust or Go specialist — though Robogo is making steady progress on the latter.
  • Open to enquiries about reliability engineering, teaching, and data visualisation.

Experience

  • Nov 2023 – Present Site Reliability Engineer ANZ
  • Aug 2015 – Dec 2019 Sessional Lecturer & Teaching Associate Monash University

Subjects: Software Engineering (UML) · Enterprise Applications Development (JavaEE) · Internet Applications Development (ASP.NET MVC5) · Computer Architecture and Operating Systems (Ubuntu and shell scripting) · Programming Foundations in Java. Lecturer for Programming Foundations in Java, Semester 2 2018.

    • Restructured and modernised Internet Applications Development for Semester 2 2018, moving the unit from ASP.NET Web Forms to MVC5.
    • Introduced code-similarity detection using ANTLR within JPlag, comparing up to 600 student submissions at a time. Unlike Stanford's MOSS it needs no upload of student work to a third-party server.
    • Wrote Python scripts to automate collecting peer-assessment feedback for Software Engineering, which sped up returning feedback to students.
    • Wrote shell scripts to automate anonymising student information for reporting.
    • Studio mentor for the Industry Experience Project, leading four teams to completion alongside mentors from MYOB — two PHP projects, an iOS project and a JavaEE project.
    • Nominated for the Teaching Excellence Award across several units, including Programming Foundations in Java, Computer Architecture and Operating Systems, and Internet Applications Development.
    • Held an average SETU (student evaluation of teaching) of 4 or above for every unit taught.

Education

  • 2013 – 2015 Master of Information Technology (Research) Monash University
    • Faculty of Information Technology Merit Scholarship.
    • Thesis: “Category R-tree”, supervised by Associate Professor David Taniar — an R-tree is a data structure for location-based queries.
    • The thesis option is open only to students averaging 75 or above.
    • High Distinction in every programming unit, including Internet Applications Development, Mobile and Distributed System, and Distributed Databases & Big Data.
    • Weekly participant in the Spatial Query Reading Group, reading papers on optimising location-based queries.
  • 2010 – 2012 Software Engineering and Computer Science Swinburne University of Technology

Activities: Golden Key International Honour Society · ICT Club · Japanese Language Club · MakeWeekend participant · student volunteer.

    • Graduated with first-class honours — an average of 83 (High Distinction average) and a cGPA of 3.91.
    • Corporate and Industry award for the highest cGPA in the graduating cohort.
    • Swinburne University of Technology Merit Scholarship.
    • Capstone: a Student Attendance System using face detection and recognition. The web system ran on a custom PHP framework; the recognition module used JavaCV, a wrapper for OpenCV. A year-long project.
    • Booking System: a side project built with the Swinburne Library as a proof of concept.
